I know very much about Japanese culture since I am Japanese, and I don't completely understand what Ryuji is saying in French, but I can see that he doesn't like the Last Samurai at all.
Well, although I didn't like the movie as much as I expected, I thought it was well made. In fact, a lot of Japanese people like the movie because it is based on the Japanese history.
Well, of course the movie is fiction, so all those characters do not exist in the Japanese historical background. However, actual samurai and Japanese emperor, Japanese citizen, old people, women were actually well reflected on those actors. It might be weird for people from other countries, but Japanese emperor is as weird as it seems in the film.
Japanese people like Western culture, I can totally understand why Tom Cruise was kept alive in the village--because they are curious, they wanted to know what's out there.
But what I would critically view is Tom Cruise survived from the massive attack of gun shot. That's impossible
