Ryo, Saeko, and Makimura....

Hi guys. I was just thinking of the relationshi between Saeko, Ryo, and Hideyuki in the anime. One website , said that Saeko was in love w/both Ryo and Makimura, but with maki's death, and kaori's replacement, she put it on the backburner. Th is porbably is pertaining to the manga.
How much did the manga go into this? And why didnt the anime  go more into depth. Were Makki and Saeko partners b4 maki joined ryo? How did Maki meet Ryo? etc.
Does Angel Heart explain any of these things?

  While Ryo/Kaori relationship progresses throughout the series, the Saeko/Ryo dynamic rarely changes past the usual "saeko trick ryo into doing job, escapes mokkori" .

I mean, that's a lot of questions... so here are some quick answers :

True.
Actually, Saeko was about to choose when Hideyuki got murdered. From this point on, her behavior with men has been deeply influenced, because she never really forgot Hideyuki.
She also became attached to Kaori in whom she's seeing the image of Makimura.

And why didnt the anime  go more into depth.
You're right, the anime is quite superficial in terms of characters portrayal and story development.
The reason? well... let's just say that the producers didn't have the means nor the time to render the depth of the manga.

Were Makki and Saeko partners b4 maki joined ryo?
Yes! and they were a right pair.

Does Angel Heart explain any of these things?
Yeah... it kinda does, but the author decided to rewrite some decisive parts of the City Hunter manga, so that they end up totally different from the original story... (you know, the "Angel Heart is an alternative sequel" thing)
For instance :
- the death of Makimura
- when Maki and Ryo first met
- when Kaori and Ryo first met
