I wonder why the translator didn't use this word instead of Otaku which ONLY has negative meaning.
Maybe they didn't know it was only a negative word?
And I think otaku is much easier to remember and to pronounce...
Look at that song by Sakamoto Kyu called 'Ue o Muite Aruko' (right title?)... well it's called sukiyaki in the states... OO Now, what does this song have to do with sukiyaki!!! lol... It just look prettier  . It's easy to remember, to say, and it's more marketable.... I think the same thing might have happened for the word otaku...
I think it's ok too... each language takes word from another and change sometimes the meaning, sometimes the pronounciation... That how it works...
